Food waste is a problem that is recurrent and that needs to be tackled in the near future. Many people are not realising how food waste is impacting on the economic and financial environment. The article published in The Guardian by Kate Lyons: Cutting food waste by a quarter would mean enough for everyone, says UN shows us clearly the situation and how dramatic it is.

1.3 billion ton of food wasted each year accounting for $ 750 billion (UN 2015) is enormous and this money which is lost each year could be used in a more productive to help poor countries or it could even be used to boost some countries’ economy. The money that could be saved from these waste can also benefit Farmers. Authorities, general public, everyone needs to take action to reduce food waste before it’s too late. What you are not realising is that this waste accounts for 3.3 gigatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions which impact on the environment.

We need to think of the future and start to reduce waste with little things which can make the difference. For instance, if all households could start their own compost with the vegetables and fruits peeling or any kitchen wastes. This would certainly help to preserve our resources as vegetables and fruits waste is around 45%. Compost at the same time reduce waste and preserve the environment. My family started Composting and I can certainly say that it reduce food waste considerably.

“For every 2 tonnes of food and drink consumed in the home, another tonne is going to waste at some point in the chain."

Food waste is not only present in European countries but also in Asian Countries even though it is much less as compared to European one. To overcome this issue, the Japanese have implement Food Recycling Law to reduce its waste and to promote recycling. Some companies have even come up with innovating ideas like Japan Food Ecology which gathers the food waste of restaurant and grocery stores and sell it as pig feed. Everyone is looking for a solution to reduce this problem, knowing its importance.
